Neighborhood Flower Order

Growing conditions and supply chain issues can alter plant availability annually. Staff do their best to fill approved requests and may make plant substitutions as necessary.

The following plants are available for community greening projects in public spaces in May of 2023. Approximate heights and spreads are noted for your convenience. Plants come in different size flats, so plan accordingly. An email with a copy of your order will be sent once the order is received. Each group may not get the flowers you have chosen; staff will do their best with plant substitutions. Please keep your contact information up to date with flowers@dmgov.org as the contact listed below will be notified of any changes when possible.

To assist in determining plant quantity

Calculate square footage (ft2) for each of your planting beds.

rectangle/square = length x width

triangle = ½ base x height

circle = 3.14 x radius2 (radius is the distance from center of circle to the edge)

Multiply the square footage of the planting bed by the plants needed per square foot to determine the number of plants needed. If you are using plants with different spacing requirements in the same area, estimate the square footage for each of the different plant types.

Recommended Spacing (inches) : Number of plants/square feet

6 inches: 4 ft2

8 inches: 2.3 ft2

10 inches: 1.4 ft2

12 inches: 1 ft2

Example: A 100 square foot garden, using plants with a recommended spacing of 8 inches would require 230 plants to fill in the area properly (100 x 2.3=230). Once the total number is determined, add about 10% to cover losses.

Note: Asclepias, Echinacea, Lobelia, Rudbeckia, Wild Bergamot have 36 plants per flat, Dianthus, Osteospermum, and Zesty Pink Zinnia have 24 plants in a flat and Geranium have 18. Please plan accordingly. If you would like to order ½ a flat, that is now available. DO NOT list the number of plants needed, this is all recorded as number of FLATS.
